As we step into 2007, 200 years since the act abolishing the transatlantic slave trade was passed, people of African heritage look around them to discover how far they have come. This play calls our attention to the conditions we face around us in the community and asks the question have things really changed? There is disadvantage in terms of political, social & economic positioning all due to the racism developed to justify and sustain the horrors of the past. This play goes from current day issues like violence on the streets to the 18th century slavery days and draws comparisons between those eras. However with black on black crime on the rise The Afterlife of Slavery asks for its audience to stand up and make a change. To learn from the past and mould the future. With one youth dead, who will have the strength to survive.
